Privacy Policy

Rant & Private Burn Journal (formerly Ember Journal) is built for thoughts you don't want anyone to see. This policy explains what the app keeps on your device, what permissions it uses, and what DahVio Studios never receives.

Effective: October 2, 2026

The short version: Rant has no account, no server, no analytics, and no tracking. What you write and record stays on your iPhone. DahVio Studios cannot read your entries, and nothing you write is ever sent to us.

1. Who We Are

Rant & Private Burn Journal is developed and published by DahVio Studios, a solo developer studio based in Long Beach, California, operated by Ray (ray@dahvio.com).

2. What Stays on Your Device

Everything the app needs is stored locally on your iPhone, inside the app's private storage:

  • Your written entries, including any writing prompt you used. These are encrypted on the device with AES-256 before they are saved, using a key kept in the iOS Keychain.
  • Voice notes you record, saved as audio files in the app's private storage and protected by iOS's built-in file encryption
  • Details about kept entries, such as whether you locked one or set a timed burn
  • Your favorite prompts and your settings (theme, font, sounds, haptics, breathing exercise, App Lock)
  • Whether you have purchased Premium, and the last App Store price shown to you
  • Small counters used to time the App Store review prompt and a one-time Premium message

None of this is uploaded to a DahVio server, tied to an account, or used to build a profile of you. DahVio Studios has no copy of your journal.

3. Burning and Deleting

When you burn an entry, the app permanently deletes its text and any voice note from the app. There is no trash folder and no undo. Timed burns delete kept entries the same way.

You can erase everything at once from Settings › Reset All Data, or by deleting the app from your iPhone.

One thing to know: if you use iCloud Backup or back up your iPhone to a computer, iOS may include the app's data in those backups, as it does for most apps. Written entries stay encrypted inside a backup. Backups are controlled by you and Apple, DahVio Studios never receives them, and an entry burned after a backup was made can remain in that older backup until it is replaced.

4. Microphone

The app asks for microphone access only when you choose to record a voice note. Audio is recorded and stored on your device. It is not transcribed, analyzed, or sent anywhere.

5. Face ID and Touch ID

If you turn on App Lock or open a locked entry, the app asks iOS to confirm it's you. Face ID and Touch ID are handled entirely by iOS: the app only learns whether authentication succeeded and never receives or stores biometric data.

6. In-App Purchase

Premium is a one-time in-app purchase processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. DahVio Studios never receives your payment details.

The app asks the App Store for Premium's price in your currency, stores a local flag once Premium is unlocked, and can ask Apple to restore a previous purchase for your Apple ID. DahVio Studios does not keep its own record of your purchase.

7. No Account. No Backend.

There is no sign-in, registration, or cloud sync. The app's only network activity is the App Store purchase and price check above. Links you choose to tap, such as this policy, the App Store review page, or an email to support, open in Safari, the App Store, or your mail app.

8. No Analytics, Ads, or Tracking

The app contains no analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or tracking frameworks. DahVio Studios does not know how often you open the app, what you write, which prompts you use, or how many entries you burn.

9. Children's Privacy

Rant & Private Burn Journal does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13, and does not require personal information in order to work.

10. Apple's Data Practices

Apple may collect certain information as part of normal iOS, iCloud, and App Store operations. For details, see Apple's Privacy Policy.

11. Changes to This Policy

If the app's data practices ever change, this policy will be updated with a new effective date.
